Parks provide much-needed tranquility within the busy city, with <a href=\"https:\/\/nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/ppp3.39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">studies showing<\/a> that in urban environments trees and green areas can provide a host of benefits including shade, storm water runoff reduction, improved air quality, reduced electricity use, and improved health and quality of life for residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In this increasingly dense downtown area with more of our residents living in high-rise buildings open space is critical. Not only do parks provide a needed place to find tranquility from the busy city, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleanairpartnership.org\/files\/StreetTrees%20Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">studies show<\/a>&nbsp;that &nbsp;in urban environments, trees and green areas can yield a host of benefits including: providing shade, reducing storm water runoff, improving air quality, reducing electricity use, and improving residents\u2019 health and quality of life.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"abcra-advocates-for\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">ABCRA advocates for:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Better maintenance of existing parks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New parks and green space in proportion to new residential units approved<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Direction of park levies and Section 37 development fees to improvements to public space in the area of development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contribution of public space in the neighbourhood by new developments beyond the minimum City requirements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintenance of existing trees and active new planting to increase overall canopy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ABCRA expects and advocates for:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><em>Existing parks to be better maintained.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>New parks and green space to be added in proportion to new residential units being approved<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Park Levies and Section 37 development fees to be directed to improvements to the public space in the area of the development.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>New developments to contribute responsibly beyond what City rules require to the public space in the neighbourhood.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Tree canopy to be sustained and re-planted.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-73793f66\">\n\n<div class=\"gb-grid-wrapper gb-grid-wrapper-464427cb gb-query-loop-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"gb-grid-column gb-grid-column-3c37582c gb-query-loop-item post-1082 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-news category-public-space generate-columns tablet-grid-50 mobile-grid-100 grid-parent grid-50\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-3c37582c\">\n<figure class=\"gb-block-image gb-block-image-872e19d6\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1014\" height=\"676\" src=\"https:\/\/avenueroadsafetycoalition.ca\/abcra\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Bridge-Opening-.webp\" class=\"gb-image-872e19d6\" alt=\"Port Lands -
